The American Pavilion's upcoming programs: LA Intensive, Venice Intensive, Toronto Intensive

It is that time of the year again and the American Pavilion is gearing up for our exciting summer and fall programs. Our application deadlines have just been extended and your students now have until June 15th to apply for our 2011 L.A. Intensive and until July 31st to apply for the Venice Intensive at the Venice International Film Festival and the Toronto Intensive at the Toronto International Film Festival.

• L.A. Intensive is a 9-day educational summer program that takes place in Los Angeles each August. Now in its eleventh year, the program is designed to provide a transition into the entertainment industry. Each day of the program is fully scheduled with workshops, private tours, panel discussions, screenings, tapings, interactive demonstrations and special events.

• The Venice Intensive is a 15-day work-study optional program that takes place at the Venice International Film Festival each year. Now in its fifth year, the Venice Intensive offers great opportunities to young Filmmakers to experience the Festival and make important contacts. In addition to Festival screenings, participants enjoy intimate round tables and witness first hand how the film P.R. and publicity machine works. The program is limited to only 30 students who share housing in traditional Venetian apartments.

• The Toronto Intensive Student Program at The Toronto International Film Festival, launched in 2010 offers a unique opportunity for emerging filmmakers and students with an interest in the entertainment industry to participate in the Toronto International Film Festival. The Toronto Intensive is an internship/educational program. Accepted students stay in Toronto for the duration of the Festival and complete an internship with an entertainment industry company doing business at the Festival. Students will also participate in educational workshops, seminars, roundtable discussions programmed by SAGIndie as well as Festival screenings and official events.

I hope you will take a moment and pass this information on to your interested students, all three of these programs are extraordinary opportunities for students interested in all aspects of the film industry.

Storyboard TV launches Third Competition

for Television Writers

New York, March 1 – Storyboard TV, an online community of scriptwriters, television producers, and TV enthusiasts, launches its second competition today awarding a $2,000 prize to the writer with the best pilot for a one-hour or half-hour television show.

At storyboardtv.com, writers can share TV scripts for original shows with their potential audience members, while soliciting feedback and gauging enthusiasm for their story. Membership to Storyboard TV is free and open to all, and all members will be able to read, critique, and ultimately vote for their favorite TV scripts.

Entries for this competition will be accepted from today through August 25, 2011. After a month of peer review, ten semi-finalist scripts will be forwarded to a panel of writers, producers, and directors which will in turn narrow the field to three.

The winner of the script competition, announced on August 8, 2011, will be chosen from the finalists exclusively by Storyboard TV’s membership community.

All semi-finalist scripts from our previous competitions can be found in the Archivesection of our website.

The Best Shorts Competition is not a traditional film festival; rather it is an avant-garde worldwide competition that strives to give talented directors, producers, actors, members of the creative team and new media creators the positive exposure they deserve. It discovers and honors the achievements of filmmakers worldwide who produce high quality shorts and new media. It promotes the award winners through press releases, media/distribution outlets and via blogging.

Its filmmaker-to-filmmaker neighborhood screening initiative creates viewers and builds community among the participating filmmakers. Those filmmakers who win Best Shorts laurels will be invited to participate in compilation DVDs and organize local events to screen not only their own films but also the films of other Best Shorts winning filmmakers. For example, imagine the thrill of filmmakers from France, India, China, Brazil and the United States joining together in a compilation DVD and showing their shorts in their hometowns around the world. After obtaining written consent from the filmmakers, the Best Shorts Competition will create the compilations and provide the instructions for holding neighborhood screening events. Participating filmmakers will be asked to share in the costs of creating and duplicating the complication DVDs, but costs can be recaptured as the filmmakers will each receive a supply of the DVDs which can then be sold at the screening events and via their websites.

The Best Shorts Competition offers a number of prizes including the following.

$1000 Cash Award: Once each year one $1,000 cash prize is awarded to one Best Shorts winner selected from among all the Best Shorts winners in all from the past twelve months.

Annual Humanitarian Award: Each year, Best Shorts grants its Humanitarian Award to one filmmaker for dedicated service to social justice, humanitarian causes or environmental issues.

$1500 Studio Award: Random Original Productions, Official Production Company of Best Shorts, is generously providing a production house opportunity valued at up to $1,500 to one Best Shorts winning filmmaker each year. The purpose of the sponsorship is to support filmmakers and the larger film community. The lucky filmmaker will receive access to a studio for three, twelve-hour production days. The studio is located in Everett, Washington.

Best of Show/Award of Excellence/Award of Merit: After each seasonal deadline, quality and creativity are celebrated in three levels of awards: Best of Show, Award of Excellence and Award of Merit. Best of Show honors are granted only if worthy productions are discovered. Likewise, no more than 15% of entries are granted Awards of Excellence. Notable artistic and technical productions are recognized at the Award of Merit award level. Judging results letters will be sent by regular mail about four to six weeks after the final deadline to all participants, i.e., to those who were granted awards and those who were not granted awards. Free digital downloads of Best Shorts laurels will be made available to all winners. Winners may also order a Best Shorts statuette for an additional cost of $295 per statuette. Shipping is free within the United States but international orders will be charged a $50 shipping fee. UCLA Shorttakes Film Festival

On behalf of UCLA's Campus Events Commission, we'd like to invite your students to participate in our 17th Annual Shorttakes Student Film Festival. The event showcases short films made by students from all over the nation.

Students are welcome to submit films (live-action or animation/digital media) under 10 minutes long. Multiple submissions are allowed, but each requires its own submission fee. Early submission is due on April 7th and is $15 per entry. Late submission is due on April 14th and is $20 per entry.

UCLA’s Campus Events Commission will select the top submissions to be sent to a judging panel made up of entertainment industry professionals. These judges will select the winners for "Best In Show", among other categories, and students have chances to win other awards as selected by the audience and Campus Events Commission. Some recent Shorttakes judges include: Adam Rifkin (writer, Mousehunt and Small Soldiers), Daniel Chun (writer, The Simpsons and The Office), Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien (producers, Funny People), and David X. Cohen (writer/producer, The Simpsons and Futurama), among many other industry figures. Prizes are TBD but will be substantial. Many past winners have gone on to work within the industry, such Shane Acker, the director of 9. The finalists’ films will be screened at our Shorttakes Festival Finale at UCLA on Tuesday, May 24th, 2011.

This is a great opportunity and stepping stone for aspiring filmmakers to show their work. The Aesthetica Short Film Competition 2011 is now open for entries! Its a fantastic opportunity to get your work broadcast to a wider audience and Aesthetica are keen to see entries from both new and established filmmakers who are driving short film forward. The winning film receives a fantastic prize package including:

This is an extra text-only newsletter to tell you about some important developments at MiShorts.

1. Additional distribution/revenue opportunities

We are always on the look-out for new ways of promoting our filmmaker’s work and maximising their earnings, so we are pleased to tell you that we have recently signed distribution agreements with Dailymotion and a major Indian mobile network operator. In both cases the revenue earned will be split 50-50 with film owners/licensees.

The Dailymotion agreement gives us a high-profile ‘partner’ channel on their site and our agreement with the mobile operator means we’ll be the exclusive content provider for a new India-wide short film portal they’re launching. As Dailymotion currently has 90 million visitors per month and the mobile operator has 130 million subscribers, these agreements will significantly increase the reach of our filmmaker’s work and the sales commission we pay them.

2. Change to our Terms & Conditions

In order for us to exploit these new distribution opportunities and others still in the pipeline, we have changed clause 7.7.1 of our Terms & Conditions to the following:

“In full consideration of the rights granted to MiShorts in section three, we undertake to pay Users whose work has been added to our library, a sum not less than 50% of the advertised download price of their film(s), including VAT, each and every time the film is downloaded from our website on a paid-for basis, and/or streamed or downloaded from third-party Video-on-Demand services, IPTV networks and mobile portals with whom we have entered into a formal distribution agreement.”

There has never been a better time for indie filmmakers to have their work with MiShorts, and things will get even better as we work towards launching our service into Singapore for the Asian and Chinese markets, and Australia for the Pacific Rim markets, including Japan. Brazil is also in our sites.

3. Raindance

4. WebTV

Today we premiere the first episode of Live In 5, a hit US webTV series. New episodes will be aired on MiShorts, YouTube, Facebook every Wednesday at 8pm US Eastern Standard Time from February 9th, but they can only be downloaded for keeps from our website. We also have the cult 60s crime spoof series, The Ex-Convicts Guide To House Arrest, written by and starring Hollywood actor, Barry Levy, (The X-Files, Flight 93) and co-starring Patrick Gallagher, (Glee, Night at the Museum). Highly recommended.

Our mobile partners are very keen to distribute webTV series, especially comedies and animation, so if you have one to submit, we’d be more than happy to consider it.

Faces of Migration Student Short Film Competition

The Filmmaking Club and the Humanities Center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA are proud to present this year's Faces of Migration Student Short Film Competition held on Sunday, April 10th. We seek student submissions from across the world that creatively reference the issue of migration.

The Grand Prize is $1000 USD. Second Prize receives $500 USD and Third receives $250 USD. In addition, all selections will be screened throughout the Faces of Migration Festival prior to the feature length movies. Submission deadline is March 20th. The first will be a tutorial on SAG Theatrical Low Budget and New Media Agreements. SAG’s Colorado Branch Executive Director Julie Crane and SAG Council Member Chaz Grundy will walk you through and help simplify the process.

The second part will be a Q&A with industry professionals who have worked with SAG Theatrical Low Budget and New Media Agreements.

2011 Indy Film Fest seeks submissions from around the globe

Festival expects growth in quantity and quality with lower fees, greater reach

INDIANAPOLIS ⎯ Submissions are now open for the 2011 Indianapolis International Film Festival (Indy Film Fest), hosted July 14 – 24 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Filmmakers of all genres, backgrounds and skill-levels are invited to submit their work to this highly-anticipated annual event on the Indianapolis arts scene.

Submission fees have been lowered this year, in an effort to bring even more diverse films into the screening process. Key deadlines in submitting are:

Early Deadline: January 1; $25 fee
Regular Deadline: March 1; $30 fee
Late Deadline: March 15; $40 fee

Feature length films in any category are eligible for the festival’s $1,000 Grand Jury prize; the 2010 Grand Jury Prize winning film was Michael Weithorn’s A LITTLE HELP, starring Jenna Fischer. Other films featured in 2010 include Academy Award-winning short film THE NEW TENANTS and opening night film BARRY MUNDAY, which hit theaters this October. Films interested in submitting must utilize Withoutabox.com (http://www.withoutabox.com/login/4101), the online tool connecting festivals and filmmakers.

Craig Mince, Indy Film Fest President, said of the open submissions, "This is going to be a very exciting year for the Festival and for our audience. There are so many great films and filmmakers that we want the people of Indiana to experience, so we are making it more affordable than ever to submit a film this year."

Films chosen for the 2011 festival will be featured in three major categories:

American Spectrum, celebrating the best in American cinema. Films must be produced or co-produced by at least one (1) U.S. citizen.
World Cinema, recognizing the best in international works. These films may be co-produced by a U.S. citizen(s) but at least one (1) producer must be a citizen of a nation other than the U.S
Matter of Fact, reserved for thought-provoking documentary filmmaking from the U.S. or around the world.

Lisa Trifone, Festival Managing Director, notes that “we're evolving as a festival, and this year we want to push the envelope. After seven successful years, we’ve proven ourselves to be a viable film festival in Indianapolis where filmmakers are eager to feature their work.”

PHASE 2: YOUR PRODUCTION
THE "WRITE AROUND" FORMAT: THIS IS HOW IT'S WORKS:
At the designated time, the contest will officially begin. Registered Filmmakers (Contestants) will have 72 hours in which to make a short film between 6 and 8 minutes in length. The contestants must have their film shot, edited and handed in by the end of the designated time period according to submission requirements.

WHAT'S THE CHALLENGE?
When the contest clock begins, a script (short scene) will be posted on our CONTEST page at www.mocksides.com (downloadable PDF) and a copy will also be sent to the filmmakers. Every Contestant must incorporate that scene in their short-film, they must shoot the scene as it is written. The assigned script will have specific instructions the filmmaker must follow, however, there will be some room for interpretation and the contestant must build a story around that scene justifying all of the characters and events.

THE CHALLENGE BEGINS:
Thursday, January 27 at 7:00p.m. (Colorado Mountain Time) the contest clock officially begins.

THE CHALLENGE ENDS:
Sunday, January 30th at precisely 7:00p.m. (Colorado Mountain Time)
The contestants must have their completed film HANDED IN to the organizers at DS StudioWorks.
Any Contestant who is late will be disqualified.

PHASE 3:
JUDGING PERIOD COMMENCES:
Our panel of industry judges will then begin scoring each qualified film to narrow-down the top finalists (no more than 10). Regardless of who makes the final round, each filmmaker will receive their judging score via email.

PHASE 4
THE MOCKSIDES UFC SCREENING & AWARDS CERMONY:
The top finalists will have their work shown where the Winner will be announced. Sorry, no one get's tipped-off as to who the top finalists are. You just have to show up to find out.

WHEN:
Friday February 4th at 7:00pm

The Global Initiatives Committee, in partnership with the City of Aurora, is hosting a poetry contest to promote the ideals that Martin Luther King, Jr. and so many others stood for and continue to actively support. In January, 2011, the City of Aurora will host their 25th commemoration of King’s life and teachings. We would very much appreciate your support in encouraging our students at CCA to consider the ways that Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision continues to inspire them, and to capture that inspiration in a poem. Winning poems will be read during the city’s week long celebration in January, and local bookstores will provide awards for the winners in each division—middle school, high school and college.

We are now accepting submissions for our 2011 Festival, to be held April 14-16. We are looking to put together a diverse program that covers a broad range of forms, modes and styles, from conventional documentary to experimental non-fiction. In short, anything that adds to the field or to the way we think about the form and practice of non-fiction filmmaking. All we ask is that the work be less than 30 minutes in length, as programming is tight and very rarely are we able to make space for longer work.

The entry fee for student filmmakers is only $10 (rising to $15 for late deadline).

… or, as we like to call ourselves, the Indy Film Fest — a nickname indicative not only of our location but also of our commitment to showcasing independent film from around the world.

We are excited to share with you that we are now accepting submission for the 2011 Indy Film Fest, to be held July 14–24 in Indianapolis at the renowned Indianapolis Museum of Art. We would love your help in building a truly comprehensive slate of the best in independent from across the globe. We hope you will share with your current students and alumni our invitation to submit their work for consideration for our 2011 festival.

Now in our seventh year, the Indy Film Fest has grown from a two-day, one-screen festival in 2004 to a 10-day, multi-screen celebration of world-class independent cinema. In 2010 we highlighted 112 films from more than 27 countries, running the gamut from domestic animated short films to international documentary features.

A few important points to note:

The 2011 Indy Film Fest runs July 14–24, hosted by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, one of the premier art museums in the United States.
The festival highlights feature-length and short films in three major categories — American Spectrum (domestic films), World Cinema (foreign films) and Matter of Fact (documentaries of any origin).
All feature-length films, in any category, are eligible for the $1,000 Grand Prize Jury award.
Films of any genre and medium are encouraged to submit, including animation, student films, and experimental projects. Rough cuts are accepted for consideration purposes.

The Regular Deadline for film submissions is March 1, but we encourage filmmakers to submit as soon as possible. We understand how difficult it is, especially in this economy, to be a self-sustaining independent artist; so, we have tried to keep our submission fees minimal, asking only that which is necessary to help us process submissions. COMEDY SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL AND SCREENPLAY COMPETITION (LACSFF), a celebration of up-and-coming comedic filmmakers and writers that launches careers while promoting the genre. for The Vail Film Festival’s Screenplay Competition

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
All CFS students and alumni who have completed, or are currently enrolled in, a minimum of one screenwriting class at CFS. Exemptions may be granted for applicants with adequate screenwriting experience.

WHAT IS REQUIRED?
- Each judge is required to read and evaluate up to 20 feature-length screenplays over a two week period starting on Tuesday, December 20th, 2010.
- Each judge must evaluate these screenplays in a professional and objective fashion without bias or prejudice.
- Each judge who volunteers agrees to evaluate assigned screenplays in the manner set forth by the Vail Film Festival and ensures the festival the he/she will perform the task to the best of his/her abilities and meet all deadlines set forth.
- Writers who enter the 2011 VFF competition are ineligible.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A JUDGE?
Each student judge will receive one Avanti Pass to the Vail Film Festival, March 31st - April 3rd, 2011 in Vail, Colorado and the unique experience of reading and evaluating officially submitted screenplays to a professional screenplay contest.

I was looking over your website and thought I would bring to your attention our film GOD's LAND that will be playing at the Starz Denver Film Festival this year. We would be honored if you, your students and faculty could attend a screening.
Inspired by a true story from 1998, GOD's LAND is about a religious group (cult) that move from Taiwan to Texas to find Jesus on TV and the end of the world. The story is told from the point of view of a family within group.

Our Fri. Nov 12th (6PM) screening will be attended by myself and the lead actors Shing Ka and Matthew Chiu. The Sat. Nov 13th (12:30PM) screening will be attended by the aforementioned plus lead actress Jodi Lin. Please click on the links below for additional information. Aspen Film Announces New Shorts Competition

for Colorado Filmmakers

November 1, 2010 (Aspen, CO) -Aspen Film, in association with Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colo., announces a special opportunity exclusively for Colorado filmmakers, visual artists, and other media storytellers - DIGITAL POSTCARDS: Colorado, a new Aspen Shortsfest 2011 competition category. Selected finalists will screen as part of the festival's juried International Competition at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen next spring, where they will compete for the Oscar®-qualifying Best Short Short, as well as a cash prize. Additionally, a finalist may be recommended for one of the festival's Creative Consultation awards.

This competition category provides a unique chance for current Colorado residents, including full-time students, to participate in the 20th annual Aspen Shortsfest, April 5 - 10, 2011. Short films of four minutes or less that have been created in and/or are about Colorado, ideally using a Colorado setting, will be considered. Shorts should tell a story, profile a person, explore a place, express a quality or essence, capture a memory, or in some way convey the filmmaker's connection to the state.

"Colorado filmmakers have been an important part of Aspen Shortsfest, and we always look for opportunities to showcase their work," says Aspen Film Program Director George Eldred. "We're delighted to introduce DIGITAL POSTCARDS: Colorado as a new way of engaging regional media storytellers." The short short is a dynamic form of visual expression, and we believe this new category will generate a lot of interest."

Aspen Shortsfest is also now accepting submissions for its regular International Competition categories in live action, documentary, and animation. The entry deadline for International Competition is December 3, 2010; the late deadline is December 17, 2010. The submissions deadline for DIGITAL POSTCARDS: Colorado is January 14, 2011.

8th Vail Film Fest offers prime networking, premieres, and skiing

The LIDF in association with the London Review of Books is calling for submissions. The call is open and international. All subject matter is considered. Short and Feature length films are accepted. First time and established filmmakers all welcome. Films must be produced after January 1st 2009.

The LIDF is the UK’s largest independent documentary festival. Since 2007 the festival has worked to ensure that London is host to exciting, diverse, challenging and inspiring films from every corner of the globe.

For beginning directors, this course explores the actor’s creative process using improvisation, script work, and neutral language.

FVM 118 Screen Actor Improvisation Techniques
This course builds on FVM 117, Understanding the Actor’s Process, and is designed for students with an interest and aptitude for on-camera performance.

FVM 211 Studio Recording for Voice
Instructs the student in preparation and performance of song and dialogue for the screen.

FVM 217 Acting for the Screen
Builds on FVM 117. Focus on circumstances, objectives (conscious and unconscious), and textual analysis in scene study work, and trusting the actor’s transparency.

FVM 219 Screen Performance Workshop
This class offers opportunity to perform in advanced student productions and professional projects in this capstone course for the Acting for the Screen Certificate Program.

FVM 227 History of Acting
A chronological education of acting styles, focusing first on acting of the ancient world then studying individual achievements in acting still used today.

FVM 228 Actor Movement and Action II
This class continues the student’s training of physical-based acting techniques.

Denver Pavilions proudly presents, "Short, Sweet, & Silent: A Third Floor Film Festival To Celebrate Denver Filmmakers."

Local short films will be shown all week on the giant 20' screen on the third floor of Denver Pavilions by the United Artist Theatre.

Students are encouraged to submit films that are 1-5 minutes in length and will translate to an audience without sound. Call for entries closes on Oct. 25th.

The purpose of this scholarship is to make a difference to a student who is working on a degree (major) or certificate. The scholarship is for the amount of $1000.00. It is not based on financial need, but the money must be used for tuition, books or fees at the Community College of Aurora during the Spring 2011 semester.

REQUIREMENTS:
1. Student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better.
2. Student must attach an unofficial transcript from CCA.
3. Student must be currently enrolled in the Spring 2011 Semester with at least 9 credit hours at CCA. This scholarship is open to all students at CCA who have successfully completed 9 credit hours at CCA.
4. Student must submit a typed essay (not to exceed one page) discussing: "Why the $1000.00 Scholarship will make a difference."
5. Your essay will be judged on content to fully describe "Why" this will make a difference, style, double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and spelling.
6. Students who have been awarded this scholarship will not be eligible to apply again.

DEADLINES:
The attached application and all attachments must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office, Administration Building Room CCA A-103 or at the Lowry Campus, Building 903-203 to the Administrative Assistant by 5:00 P.M. on or before November 18th, 2010. The selection committee, consisting of members from the Community College of Aurora and the Smoky Hill Rotary will select the recipient and an alternate no later than December 13th, 2010.

The Indie Fest is unique; it's an awards competition. Winners receive publicity as we broadcast the list of winners via press releases and to our email database of more than 24,000 filmmakers and industry insiders. Winning an Indie will help you get noticed. The Indie Fest has been very successful in introducing winners to distributors who can sell licensing rights around the world.

Entries are judged against high standards of excellence and against each other. The Indie Fest provides an equal chance of winning for all entrants, regardless of size and budget. Entries are judged on quality of craft and creativity. The Indie Fest is a showcase for cinematic gems and unique voices.

The Indie Fest's has seasonal deadlines/judging and grants awards as appropriate within four to six weeks after each deadline. Once each year the Indie Fest, in cooperation with its sister competition the Accolade, holds a festival to honor Indie Fest and Accolade winners. The event is designed specifically for the benefit of filmmakers and television producers. The public is invited on a space available basis. It is a time when filmmakers network with other filmmakers and see screenings of other filmmaker's work. Works in progress are invited so filmmakers can receive feedback from other filmmakers before completing their projects. Expert panels provide an opportunity for filmmakers to gain in-depth information about such topics as how to find a distributor. At the event a $1,000 cash prize is awarded to one Grand Prize Winner selected from among the Indie Fest and Accolade winners from the past twelve months.

Judging is a three phase process. Like most traditional festivals, the first round of judging takes place internally and is a screening to find those productions that have outstanding craft, i.e., cinematography/videography, sound, editing, etc. Many films wash-out during phase. Those productions that survive are evaluated to find the films that excel at storytelling, entertainment and communication. Entries judged to be potential Best of Show winners may be sent to outside judges for additional review. Judging standards are high and selective.

Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, the premier venue for nonfiction film in the American West, is seeking submissions for its eighth annual event. From February 11-20, 2011 the festival will screen 100+ films, including world and U.S. premieres, classics, rare and experimental works on Montana's largest screen at the historic Wilma Theater in downtown Missoula, Montana. In addition to ten days of screenings, the event will feature many public and VIP events including panel discussions, galas, receptions and networking round-tables.

The competitive event is open to non-fiction films and videos of all genres, subject matter, lengths and production dates. Awards and cash prizes will be given for Best Documentary Feature (over 50 minutes), Best Documentary Short (15-50 minutes), Best Mini-Doc (under 15 minutes) and best documentary about the American West (the Big Sky Award).

Finished films, rough cuts and works-in-progress are all accepted for this final deadline, provided that the completed film will be available for exhibition by February 11, 2011.

Studio Recording for the Voice
Instructs the student in preparation and performance of song and dialogue for the screen. This course includes instruction on song preparation and singing on camera, studio protocol, microphone techniques, ADR and voicing animated characters. Students will explore sound and its effect on emotion and character and apply acquired techniques to support the story as defined visually.

Actor Movement and Action II
Continues exploration of techniques and methods in physical movement practices applicable to screen acting, concentrating on non-verbal communication. Application of fundamental movement theories and comprehension of historical use of movement on stage and screen. Syntheses of various movement styles and energies will be explored and student will demonstrate understanding of these principles by practical application in scene work and exercises.

History and Development of Acting
A survey of the history of the stage and screen from ancient Greece to the 20th century, this course will discuss the foundations of storytelling and various styles and genres that emerged throughout western civilization and their influence on acting styles and craft. The course will also explore several styles and practices that developed in Asia and Africa. Students will learn where and when various techniques and conventions began and how they developed through the centuries.

Slated thus far, we are pleased to announce Artist in Resident: Ramin Bahrani. Roger Ebert recently proclaimed Bahrani as “the director of the decade.” And Variety’s Top Ten Screenwriters to Watch and writer of Brooklyn’s Finest: Michel C Martin.

The “Script to Screen Table Read” will be presented on one special evening open for the Colorado film community to observe—allowing SAG and/or AFTRA to showcase their talent, and giving students an opportunity for script feedback and highlight open cast and crew positions.

Dear Colorado Film School,

My name is Sidney McGregor. I am a local filmmaker based here in the greater Denver area. On November 12-14th my production company Postmay is partnering with a local non-profit The 1010 Project in helping launch a new film festival here in Denver: The Poverty Matters Film Festival. The festival exists to use the art of film-making to raise awareness about the global poor.

We are featuring two films at the festival this year. "One+One: A Human Network" (2010 Official Selection KC FilmFest, 2009 First Place BEA Festival of Media Arts) which highlights some of the partners that The 1010 Project work with in Kenya. And “ICYIZERE:hope” (screened at the 2009 Rwanda Film Festival) A documentary about a gathering of 10 survivors and 10 perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, as they learn about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and and go through a series of exercises designed to build trust. A film about the power of, and the need for, forgiveness.

Our tag line is this “Small Festival. Big Purpose.” And with this being our first year, it will be exactly that. We are not seeking anything from you other than to pass the info along to local film makers who might want to show their films and help benefit some people along the way.

I would also love to invite you to attend the festival and set up a booth (or whatever it is that you would like to do). One of the aspects that we are trying to promote is local film-making right here in Colorado and further increase the network of film-makers living here. I know that you guys do this already on a much larger scale and we are just hoping to point some more people your way.

Find a James Broughton poem you love and turn it into a short video (under 4:00) using animation, montage, film, photographs, music, spoken word, special effects, or whatever. The best Big Joy poetry videos will be featured on our James Broughton YouTube channel, and they may even find their way into the Big Joy feature film now in production! What it is:

The Compassion Campaign is the first in a series of video contests on You Tube. It’s a forum for filmmakers and artists dedicated to creating a peaceful planet and to building a sustainable future.

When:

This first contest will launch this fall with submissions being accepted September 15th through November 15th. The focus of the first contest will be global compassion. Contests will follow as quarterly events with themes focusing on creating a peaceful planet, building a sustainable future and cultivating a common unity.

The Vision:

The world today is going through a major transformation. We are facing shifts in the global environment and shifts in the global economy. We face urgent issues regarding our natural resources and a growing need for alternative energy sources. There’s no single solution to the issues we face. There are as many solutions as there are people on the planet.

Caring for the global community and for our planet is everyone’s responsibility. Global change begins with the individual, starting with a sense of compassion and growing into personal participation. We can each begin by tapping our greatest resource of all: the unlimited compassion of the human heart. Art, music and film have the power to cut through the lines of politics, economics, religion and rhetoric by moving directly into the heart. We are asking film makers, artists and activists to express their unique visions of global compassion, hope and possibility for our planet.

The contest:

Filmmakers are provided with a theme song about global compassion to be used as a soundtrack for their video. Each filmmaker is invited to express his or her unique expression of compassion. These are videos based on the question: What is your vision of compassion?

The videos will be posted on You Tube. The contest has an 8 week time span, from the kick off date to the announcement of the winner. The video with the most views by the cut-off date wins a cash prize. The contest provides a platform for visionary artists and a forum of possibilities for positive change. The intention is that, through the sharing of these possibilities, we will collectively create a movement of global compassion.

Listen Productions begins filming documentary, Hanna Ranch

Denver, July 27, 2010 - Listen Productions has begun production on the documentary film, Hanna Ranch. Hanna ranch is the story of visionary eco-rancher, Kirk Hanna. Kirk’s life was tragically cut short while he was trying to protect the West from relentless and irresponsible development. Shortly after the tragedy his amazingly determined family and friends picked up where he left off and have continued his struggle.

Born into a life as a rancher, Kirk Hanna became a leader in the environmental ranching movement that set out to protect the West from relentlessly encroaching development and misuse. Kirk saw his ranch, and the world, holistically, balancing the needs and impact of agriculture and the environment. Kirk's opinion was widely sought and respected, and some saw him as a future governor of Colorado.

But not everything was so clear to Kirk, and the dynamics of a family-run business were causing a rift in the ranch. Kirk was torn, and unlike everyone else, he saw himself as the weak link on the ranch. Depression spiraled quickly and Kirk took his own life just over a decade ago.

Despite the tragic end to his life, Kirk's legacy and fight live on as his family and friends continue to protect the West by saving Hanna Ranch.

Combining a personal family tragedy and epic cinematography of the West, Hanna Ranch has the unique formula to be as extraordinary a film as Kirk Hanna was a man.

The feature documentary film production team includes Director Mitch Dickman, Executive Producer Karl Kister and Cinematographer/Editor Zachary Armstrong.

Filming will take place on ranches across the state of Colorado into the Spring of 2011. Completion of the film is expected later that year.

Gov. Signs Creative Industries Bills ~ Focus on Colorado

We are hearing good reports of productions taking place all over Colorado so hopefully production is bouncing back from last year's lows.

The general consensus seems to be that many local production companies and crew are much busier than last year. Lets hope this trend continues long into the future.

On July 1, the Film Office will become part of the new Creative Industries Division within the Office of Economic Development and International Trade. This is exciting news for all of us as it merges the Film Office, the Colorado Council on the Arts, Art in Public Places and Arts Education programs into one office. We will emerge as one of the flagship economic drivers in Colorado. This is a huge step for Colorado and all members of the creative economy!

A December 2008 report on Colorado's Creative Economy shows that 186,251 jobs in the state are associated with creative enterprises and creative occupations. The report also notes these industries account for 3.9% of the state's estimated 3.2 million jobs, making it Colorado's 5th largest employment sector, almost as large as biotechnology/biomedical and IT & telecommunications, and larger than defense & security and agribusiness, food processing & technology. Employee earnings in these jobs, including employee benefits, were about $5 billion. Another 64,000 individuals worked in creative occupations in non-creative enterprises.

Colorado is a magnet for creative talent, ranking 5th among all states for concentration of artists. Only New York, California, Massachusetts and Vermont have a higher concentration of creative talent. Colorado ranks 2nd in concentration of architects, 7th in concentration of writers, designers, entertainers and performers, and 8th in concentration of photographers.

The study categorized creative industries into six sub-groups: design, film and media, heritage, literary and publishing, performing arts, and visual arts and crafts. Colorado's strengths are design, literary and publishing, and film and media which represent 73% of all creative industry jobs.

I strongly believe this change will help all of us showcase the creative talents in Colorado and to point out the huge economic impact the creative industries have in, and for, the state.

We will be letting you know more about these changes in the near future.

On the incentive front, the Office is currently working with the Attorney General's office to re-write the rules and regulations for the incentive program to reflect the changes resulting from the passage of HB 10-1180. We are also revising the actual incentive contracts to reflect changes in the legislation and we believe that these changes will make the program more "user-friendly". We expect these changes to be effective in early July. Any time you want more information on any of these change please let me know.

Sponsored by Fade In Magazine, the Hollywood Pitch Festival brings together more than 200 major film and TV industry players, including studio, development, and creative executives, as well as producers, casting directors, agents, and managers. Below, please find the requirements for the first night assignment as outlined by the BFA screenwriting faculty. Obviously, you will need to get started now. =)

Please note that the pre-req for Screenwriting I is Feature Script Analysis. Because this is a new program, we will allow students take these classes concurrently, but you must be registered in Feature Script Analysis in the Fall.

As per your recommendations and feedback, please note that Screenwriting I will be offered Fall 8 week 2, Screenwriting II: Spring 8 Week 1, and Screenwriting III, Fall 8 Week 2 .

We're back! Just as in the past years, we're searching for films that target the teen/young adults audience. Films should be no longer than 5 minutes in the Short Film Category, and no longer than 120 minutes for the Full Length Category.

For both, we will be accepting in the genres of drama, comedy, thriller, and documentaries. The best short films, and the best feature length film will be screened this July in Norfolk, VA. Date and venue TBA. The winners will be rewarded at the screening with prizes, and have there films showcased in our annual DVD Collection, "The 2011 Breaking Wave Film Collection," to be released next year. This years in now available in stores.
