33rd Starz Denver Film Fest is a must-stop on the fall festival circuit

In the Spotlight this week is the 33rd Annual STARZ DENVER FILM FESTIVAL (SDFF), a highly acclaimed celebration of cinema praised by indieWIRE as possibly "the best kept secret on the US film festival circuit." One of Denver's most popular and publicized events, this concentrated exposition showcases more than 200 new films from around the world with over 175 international filmmakers and other film artists in attendance.

Blending a mix of the year's best cinematic treasures with recent discoveries, SDFF has emerged as one of the preeminent fall festivals, adored by industry and audiences alike. New international releases, independently produced fiction films and documentaries, animation, experimental works, student creations, and children's programs are part of the lineup as well as tributes to a number of acclaimed international film artists such as past honorees Majid Majidi, Claude Lelouch, Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Hal Holbrook, and Ang Lee.

Exhibiting filmmakers vie for a variety of audience, juried, and achievement honors at SDFF. Among the juried awards are the Krzysztof Kieslowski Award for Best Feature Film, the Maysles Brothers Award for Best Documentary ($2,500 USD), the $2,500 Emerging Filmmaker Award for a first- or second-time filmmaker, and the $1,000 Spike Lee Student Filmmaker Award. Audience Awards are presented for Best Feature, Documentary, and Short Film, and the $10,000 Maria & Tommaso Maglione Italian Filmmaker Award recognizes a first- or second-time Italian director.

The Starz Denver Film Festival is presented by the Denver Film Society, a non-profit cultural institution dedicated to the celebration and cultivation of film as art.
